Wedding Season Survival Guide: Bridal Makeup Tips from a NYC Makeup Artist

May and June are the busiest months at our Manhattan studio — and it’s no coincidence. Wedding season is here, and as one of New York City’s most trusted bridal makeup artists, I want to make sure every bride (and every member of her wedding party) walks into that ceremony feeling completely prepared.

Whether you’re getting married in a candlelit ballroom or a sun-drenched rooftop garden, summer weddings come with their own set of beauty challenges. Heat, humidity, hours on your feet, and hundreds of photos. Here’s how to handle all of it.

Start with SPF — Yes, Even on Your Wedding Day

Outdoor summer ceremonies are stunning. They’re also UV-intense. Mineral sunscreen is the first thing I apply under bridal makeup — always. It protects your skin, creates a smooth base, and doesn’t interfere with your foundation. Skipping it means risking redness, irritation, or uneven coverage by the time you get to photos.

Apply mineral SPF after moisturizer, let it absorb, then go straight into primer. Your makeup will sit better and last longer.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Ceremonies: What Changes

For indoor ceremonies, you have more flexibility. Luminous finishes, softer edges, and lighter coverage all photograph beautifully in controlled lighting. For outdoor summer weddings, I make a few key adjustments:

Think long-wear everything. Primer goes on first. Powder sets your foundation. Setting spray locks it all in place. And waterproof mascara and eyeliner are non-negotiable — happy tears are beautiful, but raccoon eyes are not.

I also tend to go slightly more pigmented on outdoor looks. Natural light is flattering but strong — a more defined lip and brow reads better in photos and in person than something very sheer.

Keeping Makeup Flawless in Heat and Humidity

Summer humidity is the enemy of a fresh face. Here’s the approach I use on every summer bride:

Prime well. Our Satin Slip primer creates a base that grips your foundation and slows down fading. Follow with a foundation that’s sweat-resistant and buildable — you want coverage that holds, not melts. Set with a translucent setting powder, focusing on the T-zone, then finish with a long-wear setting spray. That’s your armor.

For touch-ups throughout the day, blotting papers are your best friend. They absorb oil without disturbing your makeup — and they take about 10 seconds.

Don’t Forget the Brows

I cannot tell you how many brides come to me having never thought about their brows before their wedding. Your brows frame your entire face — and in wedding photos, they’re everything. If you have a summer wedding coming up, book your eyebrow services in NYC now. Brow shaping and tinting give you definition that photographs beautifully without looking heavy-handed. If you want a longer-lasting solution, brow lamination creates a polished, full look that holds all day with no touch-ups.

And if you’re considering microblading, book it at least 6–8 weeks before your wedding to allow for healing and your touch-up appointment.

Book Your Bridal Trial

A bridal trial isn’t optional — it’s how we figure out exactly what works for your face, your dress, and your vision before the big day. It’s also when I teach you (or your partner, or your bridesmaids) a few techniques you can use for touch-ups between the ceremony and reception.
