Beat the Heat: How to Make Your Makeup Last All Day in NYC Summer Humidity

If you’ve ever left your apartment looking flawless and arrived at work looking like you’ve been outside for three hours — welcome to a New York City summer. The combination of heat, humidity, and a subway commute is genuinely challenging for your makeup. But it’s not unbeatable.
This is one of the most common topics that comes up in makeup lessons in New York at our Manhattan studio. My clients want to know how to actually keep their makeup on, not just look good for the first hour. Here’s everything I teach.

Start with the Right Primer
Primer is the difference between makeup that lasts and makeup that slides. Our Satin Slip primer creates a smooth, grippy base that foundation actually adheres to. In humid weather, this step is more important than ever. Apply it all over after SPF, let it set for about 60 seconds, then build your makeup on top.
If you have oily skin or a particularly shiny T-zone, use a mattifying primer in those areas specifically. You don’t have to prime your whole face the same way — treat different zones differently.
Choose the Right Foundation Formula
Not all foundations are created equal in summer. Heavy, full-coverage formulas tend to feel suffocating in heat and are more prone to sliding. I recommend switching to a lighter formula like our Natural Liquid Foundation — buildable coverage, soft-matte finish, breathable. You’ll actually feel more comfortable and look better at hour six than you would in something heavier.
Apply with a damp sponge rather than a brush in summer — it sheers out any excess and prevents that “mask” look that gets worse as you sweat.
Set, Set, Set
Two-step setting is your summer strategy. First, use a translucent setting powder to lock your foundation in place — press it in with a puff rather than dusting it on. Focus on the nose, chin, and forehead. Second, finish with a long-wear setting spray while your face is still slightly damp from the powder. This bonds all your layers together and dramatically extends your wear time.
Waterproof Eyes and Brows Are Non-Negotiable
Our Waterproof Gel Eyeliner and waterproof mascara exist for a reason. In summer, they’re not optional extras — they’re your foundation (pun intended). Sweat and humidity will move a regular formula. Waterproof will not.
The same logic applies to your brows. If you fill them in, use a brow gel to set them after. Our Brow Fixx Gel holds brow hairs in place all day regardless of the weather. And if you want brows you don’t have to think about at all this summer, our eyebrow services in NYC include lamination — which gives you groomed, full, styled brows that hold through heat, humidity, and everything else for 6–8 weeks.
The Commuter Touch-Up Kit
Keep these in your bag this summer: blotting papers (not powder wipes — they add product buildup), a travel-size setting spray, your lip product of choice, and our Touch Up Concealer for anything that needs a refresh under the eyes or around the nose. That’s it. You don’t need to redo your whole face — you just need to reset the right spots.
Want to Learn These Techniques in Person?
Everything I’ve described here is something we cover hands-on in makeup lessons in New York at our Upper East Side studio. In a private session with one of our licensed estheticians, you’ll learn the exact order of operations for your skin type, which products work best for your specific concerns, and how to apply them correctly so your look actually holds. Most clients leave saying it’s the single most useful beauty investment they’ve made.
XO,
Shara
